history

On October 10, 2001, the football teams of Andebu IL , Arnadal IL , Barkåker IF , Eik Tønsberg , Flint , IF Hauk , IF Husøy og Foynland , Høyjord IL , IL Ivrig , Nøtterøy IF , Ramnes IF , Sem IF , Slagen IF , Stokke IL , Teie IF , Tjøme IF , Tømmerholt IF , Tønsberg FK , Vear IF and Vivestad IF to form FK Tønsberg.

prehistory

The most successful predecessor club among the individual clubs was Eik Tønsberg , whose place in the third division was also taken over by the new club. The club founded in March 1928 as Eik IF rose in 1957 in the first-class Hovedserien . In their second season in the highest national league, the team played for the championship title, but as runner-up behind Fredrikstad FK in their season they missed the championship final. The following year, again second in the table behind Fredrikstad FK, the club reached the newly introduced game for third place. With a 4-2 win over Vålerenga IF , the team won the bronze medal.

The 1960/61 season ended with the greatest success in the club's history, when Eik Tønsberg's team reached the championship final against Fredrikstad FK. There she had to admit defeat with a 2-0 defeat. In the following season it was only enough for eleventh place in the table, so that the qualification for the 1st Divisjon held in the calendar year as the highest division was missed. Initially still involved in the fight for promotion, the club was placed in the middle of its second division season from the mid-1960s. In 1970 the team finally rose to the third division and in the following decade commuted between third and fourth division.

1980 Eik Tønsberg returned to the second division and immediately placed in the front division. 1982 behind Kongsvinger IL table runner-up, the team reached the promotion round, in which they prevailed against Fredrikstad FK and Steinkjer IFK . After a fifth place in the first year, the club slipped into the relegation battle and rose again in 1985. While the club was renamed Eik Tønsberg in 1989 , he moved back into the promotion round to the first division, this time he only finished last there. In the following seasons, the club stayed in the area of the promotion ranks and qualified in 1996 as fifth in the table for the now single-track second division. As third in the table, the team reached the relegation games against Tromsø IL in the first season , but lost both games. In the following seasons represented in the relegation battle, the club rose in 2000 from the third division, where he rose as third in the table in FK Tønsberg.

FK Tønsberg since 2001

As second in the table behind Bærum SK and Pors Grenland respectively , the newly founded club narrowly missed promotion to the Adeccoligaen in the first two years of its existence. Under the Swedish coach Reine Almqvist , the club dominated the league in the 2004 season with 20 wins in 26 games this season, but in the second division season in 2005 the team had no chance and was relegated immediately. In the following years the team established itself in the top group of their respective third division seasons.
