history

Mjøndalen IF was founded in August 1910. Football quickly established itself as the most important sport within the club and in 1918 the team took part in the cup competition for the first time . After several regional championship titles, the club won its first national title in 1933. With a 3-1 win over Viking Stavanger , he won the national cup, which was defended the following year with a 2-1 win after extra time against Sarpsborg FK . As a result, the club qualified for the national championship series introduced in 1937 under the name Norgesserien . In the same year the club won its third cup title. Until the war-related interruption in 1940, the club was then one of the leading teams in its league season and was able to pick up on this again in 1947. As district champions, the club moved into the championship finals, but failed there in the semifinals to IL Sparta . After this success came the slump, in 1950 the club was relegated to the second division.

After the soccer team of Mjøndalen IF had to compete in third class at times, they managed to return to the first division for the 1972 season. In the following years she mainly played against relegation, which was prevented several times on the last non-relegation place. In 1976 the club surprised and finished second behind master Lillestrøm SK , one point behind. The club had thus qualified for the 1977/78 UEFA Cup , in which the opponent was FC Bayern Munich in the first round . The Norwegian club said goodbye to the European Cup with two clear defeats. At the same time, things went badly in the league, and the team was relegated to the second division. the immediate ascent was followed by another descent. Between 1982 and 1987 the club played again five seasons in the first division. Subsequently, the club said goodbye to higher-class football, before being promoted to the second-class Adeccoliga before the 2009 season . In November 2014 Mjøndalen IF qualified again for the first division in relegation games against Brann Bergen . After only one year of play, however, you had to return to the OBOS league .
