history
The Sarpsborg 08 FF football club dates back to 1999, when 16 clubs in Sarpsborg started a collaboration under the working title "Klubben 2000" in order to build up a high-quality football team in Sarpsborg over the long term.
In 2000, Sarpsborg FK played as the top club in Sarpsborg in the Norwegian third division (2. Divisjon) and changed name to Sarpsborg Fotball . At the end of the season, however, the club rose and withdrew from the collaboration. From 2001 the fourth division team Navestad IF was promoted with its first team as FF Sarpsborg. A year later the name was changed to Borg Fotball and the club rose to the 3rd division. In 2003 the FF Sarpsborg rose at the end of the season, but at the same time the FK Sparta Sarpsborg in the 3rd division. From 2004 the FK Sparta Sarpsborg was promoted, Borg Fotball played as the 2nd team in the 4th league. At the end of the season the Sarpsborg FK rose to the 3rd division and 2005 in the Adeccoligaen (2nd division). In the 2006 season, FK Sparta Sarpsborg reached 10th place in the table.
In 2007, FK Sparta Sarpsborg rose formally again, but since Raufoss IL did not receive a license, the club kept its place in the Adeccoliga. After negotiations, the A-teams of FK Sparta Sarpsborg and Sarpsborg FK relegated to the 7th and 5th league respectively. The "new" cooperation association SFK Sparta receives the second division license for this. At the beginning of the 2008 season, SFK Sparta changed its name to Sarpsborg Sparta Fotballklub and ended the season in 10th place. The new club logo caused heated debates as it was very similar to that of the Australian football club Sydney FC . The name will finally be changed to Sarpsborg 08 Fotballforening in 2009 . The club receives a 3-point deduction for the current season from the Norwegian Football Association (NFF) due to a deficient budget. The club finished the season in 5th place in the Adeccoliga and was thus qualified for the relegation tournament for the last promotion place in the Tippeliga . In the semifinals, Sarpsborg beat local rivals Fredrikstad FK (relegation place of the Tippeliga) 2-0 in the Fredrikstad Stadium. In the final of the relegation, Sarpsborg 08 FF defeated Kongsvinger IL 3-2 in the first leg, but lost the second leg at Gjemselundstadion 3-1 and stayed another season in the Adeccoliga. On November 7th, 2010 Sarpsborg 08 secured 2nd place in the Adeccoligaen 2010 with a 4-0 win against Alta and went straight to the Tippeligaen . Thus Sarpsborg 08 is the first team from Sarpsborg in the top Norwegian football league since 1974. After a successful start to the 2011 season, the team failed to win from the 8th round of the series, and Sarpsborg 08 rose on matchday 27 after losing to Brann Recovery prematurely. Sarpsborg 08 was praised from all sides for their courageous football and the continued use of semi-professionals for economic reasons. On the penultimate matchday of the Adeccoliga 2012, Sarpsborg 08 FF secured second place in the table and direct promotion with a 3-2 home win against Notodden. Nevertheless, the club separated from coach Roar Johansen. On November 21, 2012, the former England international Brian Deane was introduced as the new coach. The 2013 season started successfully, but after a series of defeats they fell back to the bottom of the table. The relegation place was only reached on matchday 29. The two relegation games against the aspirant Ranheim IL were won. Sarpsborg 08 established itself in the following years. In the 2015 and 2017 seasons, the team qualified for the final of the Norwegian Football Cup, but lost both games. In the 2017 season, the team under coach Geir Bakke finished third in the Tippeliga and took part in qualifying for the 2018/19 UEFA Europa League . Here you could reach the group stage straight away.
