The Hovedserien 1959/60 was the 16th season of the highest Norwegian football league and the twelfth season under the name Hovedserien . The season began on July 26, 1959 and ended with the game for third place on June 16, 1960.

mode

The 16 teams played against each other in two groups, each with eight teams, in a simple game round with a return game, so that each team played 14 games. The two last placed had to be relegated.

The champion was determined in a final game between the two group winners. For the first time, the champions from Norway also qualified for the European Cup .

What was new this season was that third place was also determined by a final game. Compared to the previous season, some of the groups have been redistributed.

Fredrikstad FK became Norwegian champions for the eighth time. In the final, defending champion Lillestrøm SK was defeated 6-2.

SK Brage and Start Kristiansand had to relegate from the newcomers . SK Rapid Moss and Vålerengens IF were able to hold out in the Hovedserien .
