Rimsø is a small Jutland town near Grenaa in the northeast of the Djursland peninsula in Denmark . The large and high-altitude Romanesque church made of granite ashlars is said to have served as a refuge in the Middle Ages during times of war. A very low door leads to a staircase that runs from left to right like the spiral staircases of old castles. The portal of the church is attributed to the Romanesque stonemason Horder (around 1180). There is a nature reserve between Rimsø and Emmelev .

The rectory

Rimsø rectory dates from 1593 and is the oldest village rectory in the country. The trees in front of his front door could be so-called umbrella trees. Umbrella trees - often linden or ash - were planted in pairs in front of the front door, where, according to tradition, they were supposed to protect the house from all evil, especially those brought in by strangers.

The runestone

The coexistence of pagan and Christian grave forms in cemeteries is not uncommon in Denmark. About 100 Danish churches have a grave mound as a neighbor - in Elmelunde , Krogsbæk and Rimsø even in the cemetery. The rune stone at the foot of the burial mound was discovered in the base of the church in the last century. This stone is unusual in that the inscription runs on the narrow side of the stone and must be read backwards. It reads: "Thori, brother of Enrathi, built this stone in memory of his mother and ... (death is) worst for the son".
