history

The place name Grenaa developed from Grindhøgh (around 1250), so possibly means Grus - or gravel hill . Grenaa received city rights as early as 1445 . Until the 19th century it lay between the Baltic Sea and Kolindsund , at that time the second largest inland lake in Denmark; the lake fell dry due to siltation and drainage.

The city formed an independent municipality Grenaa in the Århus district until 2006 . The municipality covered an area of 196 square kilometers and had 18,641 inhabitants (2004). With the administrative district reform, which came into force on January 1, 2007, the municipalities of Grenaa, Nørre Djurs and Rougsø were merged into one municipality.
