Hans Broge (* 1822 in Grenå ; † 1908 in Aarhus ) was a Danish entrepreneur, founder of shipping lines and friend and supporter of the city of Aarhus.

Entrepreneurial activities

Born as a child of poor parents, his father was a seaman , he started his business apprenticeship in 1837 with a merchant in the Meulengracht in Aarhus. Ten years later, in 1847, Hans Broge started his own business at Mindegade 8, Aarhus. His business skills became evident early on and trade flourished. In addition, he soon owned 3 farms, 2 brick factories and carried out large exports , especially Danish butter , to England . he was also a great patron of the city of Aarhus.

In the middle of the 19th century , Aarhus did not have the status it enjoys today. Odense , Aalborg and Helsingør were much larger and the provincial town of Aarhus only had 6,000 inhabitants . Aarhus owes it mainly to Hans Broge that it is now Denmark's second largest city. His forward-thinking ideas laid a foundation for trade and industry that made Aarhus flourish. Broge was jointly responsible for the train connection to Aarhus, as well as for the connection to his hometown Grenå. The Aarhus Steamship Company in 1865 was also created through his initiative. The shareholders acquired a steamboat that later operated on the Aarhus- Copenhagen route. This made Jutland an important hub for trade and business.

Aarhus sponsor

Hans Broge also financed various projects in the city. The Clemensbrücke , which connects the port and the train station, was built with his financial support. But the new theater in Aarhus also enjoyed his support. Soon there wasn't a building project in Aarhus where Hans Broge wasn't involved. His commitment was recognized by the Knight's Cross , the Danebrogorden and the Commander's Cross . The Jutlanders gave him the nickname "The uncrowned King of Jutland".
