The 1. Divisjon 1979 was the 35th season of the highest Norwegian football league and the 17th season under the name 1. Divisjon . The season began on April 22,  1979 and ended on October 14, 1979.

mode

The twelve teams played against each other in a simple game round with a return game, so that each team played 22 games. Champion was the leader after the last match day. The last three teams had to be relegated.

season

Viking Stavanger became Norwegian champion for the sixth time. They also won their third cup. This was Viking's first double .

Viking led the table for most of the season. At halftime they were up to four points ahead. Towards the end, however, Start Kristiansand and Moss FK came up again and briefly took the lead in the standings, but in the end Viking won.

Of the promoted Hamarkameratene , Mjøndalen IF and Rosenborg Trondheim only Rosenborg could hold in the 1st division.
