The 1. Divisjon 1981 was the 37th season of the highest Norwegian football league and the 19th season under the name 1. Divisjon . The season began on April 24, 1981 and ended on October 18, 1981.

The twelve teams played against each other in a simple game round with a return game, so that each team played 22 games. Champion was the leader after the last match day. The last two teams had to be relegated. The third from last had to go to a relegation round against the two runners-up in the 2nd division (group A and B).

Vålerengens IF became Norwegian champions for the second time.
During the season a duel developed between Vålerengens IF and Rosenborg Trondheim . Other teams were only able to make contact at times. Rosenborg led by three points on Matchday 17. But then they lost the next four games and slipped even behind Viking Stavanger to third.
Of the promoters Brann Bergen , Hamarkameratene and SK Haugar , only Hamar managed to stay in the league.

Relegation
Molde FK was able to prevail in an exciting relegation against the two runners-up in the 2nd Divisjon and rose. Brann Bergen had to relegate after only one season, Pors remained second class.
