The Hovedserien 1949/50 was the sixth season of the highest Norwegian football league and the second season under the name Hovedserien . The season began on August 7, 1949 and ended with the second final game on June 18, 1950.
The 16 teams played against each other in two groups, each with eight teams, in a simple game round with a return game, so that each team played 14 games. The two last placed had to be relegated.
The champion was determined in two finals between the two group winners. Compared to the previous season, some of the groups have been redistributed.

IF Fram Larvik and Fredrikstad FK did not qualify for the finals until the last group match day. Promoted Fram narrowly prevailed in both games and became Norwegian champions for the first time.
