Idrettsforeningen Fram is a Norwegian sports club from the town of Larvik in Vestfold og Telemark . Today he has departments for football , handball and speed skating .

history

The association was founded on January 15, 1894. Fram is Norway's oldest football club.

Fram means forward in Norwegian . The name is said to have been taken over from Fridtjof Nansen's polar ship of the same name. The ship was built in Larvik and launched two years before the sports club was founded. At the christening of the ship , the godmother Eva Nansen , Fridtjof's wife, is said to have announced: << Forward (Fram) is your name! It should go forward (Fram). And now you can start! >>. The club founders have adopted these words as the motto for their club.

Speed skating

Bjørg Eva Jensen recorded the greatest success of the club when she won the gold medal in 3000 meters speed skating at the Olympic Games in Lake Placid in 1980 . Other successful speed skaters are Tom Erik Oxholm , who won two bronze medals (5000 meters and 10 000 meters) in Lake Placid and Bjørn Tveter became the 1974 European champion in the professional speed skating league (only existed from 1972 to 1974).

Soccer

In 1912, Fram was actually a cup champion , which is considered the Norwegian championship in Norway. In the final, Oslo's Mercantile was defeated 2-1, but after their opponents successfully sued by claiming that Fram had fielded an ineligible player, the final was repeated. In the replay, Fram went down 6-0. The soccer team won the Norwegian league in the 1949/50 season .

In terms of football, there is an intense rivalry with the Larvik Turn club , which is often referred to as an archenemy. When, in 1999, a new club called "Larvik Fotball" was founded, an attempt was made to unite the football forces of the city and its surroundings, but Larvik Turn did not join this initiative. Fram, however, transferred his license to the new club, then for the 4th divisjon (fifth level) and rose twice in the next two years. In 2005 Larvik Fotball went bankrupt and Fram took over the license again. In the first year of his resurrection, Fram was relegated to the 3rd divisjon , but after a three-year consolidation phase, he was able to return to the 2nd divisjon . Since then, the club has played steadily at this level.
