The twelve teams played against each other in a simple game round with a return game, so that each team played 22 games. Champion was the leader after the last match day. The last three teams had to be relegated.

Viking Stavanger was Norwegian champion for the fourth time in a row. It was the fifth title for this team.
The season was balanced again. No team could really pull away. Only Viking had a three point lead once. Otherwise it stayed with a maximum of two points. With a draw with their direct pursuer Rosenborg Trondheim on the penultimate matchday, Viking almost secured the title, as they then had two points and ten goals ahead. There was a thrilling race for the two UEFA Cup places that ended with a decision on the last day of the match: Rosenborg's defeat at Brann Bergen and the simultaneous victory of IK Start meant that Rosenborg slipped past both teams to fourth place and missed out on it the qualification for the European competition. The difference between places two and four was only one goal.
Of the promoted Fredrikstad FK , Lillestrøm SK and Os TF only Os TF had to relegate.
