In the 1977/78 season they were eliminated after victories over the Icelandic representative Fram Reykjavík in the 2nd round against Eintracht Braunschweig . The following years were less successful. The best placement in the league was a 3rd place in 1991 and 1992. From 1995 the club got into financial difficulties. Recently, however, investors have been won again, and sporting success has also returned. Since the 2005 season, Start has been playing in the Tippeligaen , the highest Norwegian league, and was able to achieve 2nd place in the first season. After the relegations in 2007 and 2011, the direct return to the top division followed.
The club's most successful player is Svein Mathisen , who played a total of 663 games for IK Start. Of these, 327 games were in the top division, in which he scored a total of 106 goals. Mathisen thus holds the club record for goals scored and games played.
