Mykland made his debut for Bryne FK in the Norwegian professional league at the age of 18 . In the same year he switched to Start Kristiansand , where he quickly established himself as a regular player and in 1990 also made the leap into the national team. Mykland quickly became a crowd favorite and is considered one of Norway's most popular football players.

After a short loan deal with FC Utrecht , Mykland moved to FC Linz in 1996 , but left the club a year later for Athens to Panathinaikos Athens . In 2000 he moved on to the Bundesliga for TSV 1860 Munich . However, there he could not prevail. He also caused a stir when he admitted during the winter break of the 2001/2002 season: "I can no longer see the face of coach Peter Pacult ". A few days later, the club announced the separation from Mykland, who moved to Denmark to FC Copenhagen . In 2004 he ended his career with the Danish champions for the time being. In May 2008, Mykland returned to IK Kristiansand completely unexpectedly and announced that he would like to continue his career again. In 2009 he celebrated his comeback with the first division star Kristiansand. The comeback faltered shortly before when Mykland was found to be using drugs. A court sentenced him to a fine and community service. In any case, Mykland brought his club a big boost in image and, in particular, high sales through the sale of fan articles of his jersey.

Erik Mykland participated with the national team in the 1994 and 1998 World Championships and the 2000 European Championships . In 1998 he reached the second round of the world tournament with Norway. In Copenhagen , Mykland was found drunk on the street once asking passers-by to arm wrestle.
