Starting position for arm wrestling

Arm wrestling is a strength sport practiced for the purpose of measuring strength .

Two opponents sit or face each other at a table. Both put the elbow of one arm on the table, stretch their hand up, and shake hands. In response to a start command, they both try to press the opponent's arm onto the tabletop. The elbows of both participants must always remain on the table. The winner is whoever presses the opponent's arm down so far that the back of the hand touches the table top.

Arm wrestling

Arm wrestling, known as armwrestling as a competitive sport , attracted attention , especially in the United States , in the mid-1980s . Responsible for this was the Hollywood film Over the Top with Sylvester Stallone , in which the former world champion in arm wrestling, Rick Zumwalt , also played.

The so-called arm wrestling in Germany (English for arm wrestling, literally arm wrestling) is an attempt to bring arm wrestling into a regulated, competition-compatible form.

In this sport, however, it is not just the strength of the opponents that is decisive, but also the technique.

hazards

Typical fracture of the humerus caused by arm wrestling

Arm wrestling poses a risk to tendons and bones , provided that the muscles are appropriate , as these are sometimes unable to cope with the unusual stress and tear or break. Due to the extremely high forces that can arise during arm wrestling and the stress on the arms during a rotational movement, there is a risk of complicated splinters or debris fractures associated with temporary or permanent nerve damage.

In addition, if the bones are not yet fully developed, there is a risk of injuring the growth plate .
