Ceulemans was a striker and midfielder who took part in all major international tournaments for Belgium between 1980 and 1990. His greatest success was the 1980 European Championship . In the first group game in the finals in Italy, he equalized England's 1-0 lead by Ray Wilkins with his goal in the 30th minute. He also stormed against Spain (2: 1), Italy (0: 0) and in the final on June 22nd in Rome against Germany in the narrow 1: 2 defeat for Belgium. In qualifying for the 1982 World Cup in Spain, he scored two goals in seven games. In the World Cup tournament, the final rounds against the Argentine defending champions, El Salvador, Hungary, Poland and the Soviet Union were added. In qualifying for the European Football Championship in France in 1984, Ceulemans played all six games in Group 1 against Switzerland, GDR and Scotland and scored in the 18th minute of the 2-1 win on April 27, 1983 in Brussels against the GDR 1: 1 equalizer. In the final round, coach Guy Thys's players lost to hosts France (0: 5) and Denmark (2: 3) and could only hold their own against Yugoslavia 2: 0. He was also active in Group 1 in Europe against Poland, Albania and Greece in the qualifying matches for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. Belgium and Poland led the group tied with 8: 4 points each and the Ceulemans team had to play two relegation games against the Netherlands as runners-up. With a 1-0 win in Brussels and a 2-1 defeat in Rotterdam, the ticket was bought for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. Seven games were added to Ceuleman's international appearances. At the 1986 World Cup , he was fourth with his team. The captain had played seven other World Cup games and scored three goals. In the goalless draw, the Belgian midfield formed with Patrick Vervoort , Enzo Scifo , Ceulemans and Franky Vercauteren . Striker Nico Claesen had scored seven goals in eight games in qualifying. The veteran from Bruges contributed to the successful participation in the World Cup in Italy in 1990 with one goal in seven games against Czechoslovakia, Portugal, Switzerland and Luxembourg. In Italy, he was eliminated from the World Cup tournament in the round of 16 after a 1-0 defeat after extra time against England with his teammates. Ceulemans and Scifo had dominated the game for most of the time, but David Platt scored the goal in the 119th minute. In 52 international matches, Ceulemans, often acting as a "lagging left winger", led the "Red Devils" onto the field as captain. Ceulemans played a total of 16 games in three World Cup tournaments and scored four goals. In two European Championship finals, there are seven games with two goals. In the qualification for the EM tournaments he is noted with 19 appearances with four goals. The Belgian record player played his last international match on February 27, 1991.
