Career
Club career
Marc Emmers, born in Hamond-Achel in 1966, began playing football for the Thor Waterschei club, now known as KRC Genk . There the defender was in 98 league games from 1983 to 1987, in which he scored fourteen goals. In 1987 he was signed by Aad de Mos for the KV Mechelen team , which was at its peak in sport in those years and had just become the Belgian cup winner. As a result, the team around players such as goalkeeper Michel Preud'homme , defender and captain Leo Clijsters or midfielder Erwin Koeman were eligible to start for the European Cup Winners' Cup 1987/88 . There the team from Mechelen advanced to the final after Dinamo Bucharest , FC St. Mirren , Dinamo Minsk and Atalanta Bergamo were eliminated. In Strasbourg , France , KV Mechelen finally won the European Cup Winners' Cup with a 1-0 win against Ajax Amsterdam , which is still the greatest success in the club's history. A year later, Marc Emmers was again very successful with KV Mechelen when the Belgian football championship was won for the fourth and, until today, last time. After the championship in 1989 Aad de Mos left Mechelen for RSC Anderlecht . At the same time, the great successes of the Provincial Association also decreased.
Marc Emmers stayed in Mechelen until 1992 and then moved to Anderlecht. In the following five years as a player at RSC Anderlecht, Marc Emmers was usually only used sporadically and soon lost his place in the regular formation, but was still involved in winning three championships between 1993 and 1995. In 1997 Marc Emmers signed a contract with the Italian second division club AC Perugia , where he only stayed for a few months and was transferred to the Swiss club FC Lugano in the same year . There and at the lower-class Belgian club KFC Diest , Marc Emmers let his active career as a football player come to an end until 2000.
National team
Between 1988 and 1994, Marc Emmers played in Mechelen and Anderlecht on a total of 37 international matches in the jersey of the Belgian national team . He got two goals. He was appointed to Belgium's squad for the 1990 World Cup in Italy by national coach Guy Thys . After finishing second in the group stage, the Belgian team made it into the round of 16, only behind Spain but ahead of Uruguay and South Korea, where they lost 1-0 to England after extra time in Bologna . It was only in the 119th minute of the game that David Platt managed to overcome the Belgian defensive.
Four years later, at the 1994 World Cup in the USA , Marc Emmers was again in the Belgian squad. As in Italy, Belgium's selection came to an end in this tournament in the round of the best sixteen teams. This time Belgium failed 3-2 to Germany. The last sixteen in Chicago was Marc Emmers' last game in the Belgian national football team, after which he ended his international career.
