Philippe Julien Albert (born August 10, 1967 in Bouillon , Luxembourg Province ) is a former Belgian football player on the position of defender .
career
Born in 1967, Philippe Albert began his professional career in 1985 at SC Charleroi , where he played until 1989. In 1987 he also made his debut for the Belgian national team . From 1989 he was under contract with KV Mechelen . In 1992, the same year that he moved to RSC Anderlecht , he won the Belgian Golden Shoe . With Anderlecht he was twice Belgian champion and once cup winner .
In 1994 he joined the Belgian national team at the World Cup in the United States . There Albert showed what was later described as "impressive". After the World Cup, he moved to English first division club Newcastle United for £ 2.6 million .
Albert's five-year stint with the Tynes was overshadowed by injuries and he only played 96 games. Nevertheless, he is still considered one of the club's most popular foreign players. His greatest moment is a goal he scored against Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel from 40 yards (just over 36½ meters) in 1996 . With Albert Newcastle won the runner-up in 1995/96 and 1996/97 .
After Ruud Gullit became the team's new coach in 1998, Albert was only used six times. He was briefly loaned to Fulham FC . In 1999 he left the club and moved back to Belgium to Sporting Charleroi .
