Finger hooks without straps

The Fingerhakeln is an old alpine , operated mainly in Bavaria and Austria weight training .

In finger-hacking, both opponents sit across from each other at a table and try to pull the opponent towards them by their finger. The opponent can be defeated through physical strength, overcoming the stretching pain and a corresponding technique. As a rule, the opponents hook their middle fingers into a leather strap, but in principle any finger is allowed (with the exception of the thumb). Sometimes just the index fingers are hooked together without a strap. Two catchers sit behind the two hookers. There are also an arbitrator, a chairman and two assessors.

Allegedly, quarrels were fought in this way earlier in the Alpine country. It joins the tradition of European sports before it came to extensive standardization through gymnastics and sport . In fact, finger wrestling is an organized sport in its current form. Leather straps (approx. 10 cm long and 6 to 8 mm thick), table (79 cm high, 74 cm wide and 109 cm long), stool (40 by 40 cm, 48 cm high) and the distance between the center line and the side lines (32 cm) are standardized. Every year Bavarian, Austrian, German and Alpine championships are held in different weight and age groups.

The idiom rubbing someone over the table - meaning defeating someone (rather tricky), playing them off - has its origins in this popular sport, in which not only strength but above all technology can make the difference.
