Athletic career

Mathisen came from the youth of Start Kristiansand . He made his adult debut for the club in 1973 and quickly established himself as a regular in the competitive team, which was one of Norway's top teams in the 1970s. In 1975 the offensive player also became a national player. After regularly qualifying for the UEFA Cup with the club , he won the league title in 1978 and 1980, respectively. He had also made a name for himself outside the country's borders, for the winter break after winning the first championship he switched to Hibernian Edinburgh on loan to Scotland . After 327 league games in which he had scored 106 goals, he ended his career at "IK Start" in 1989.

Around the turn of the millennium, Mathisen worked as a commentator on TV 2 . He later returned to Start Kristiansand as a functionary, where he worked as a sports and media director.

In 2010 Mathisen was diagnosed with gastric cancer. In January of the following year he succumbed to cancer at the age of 58.

Mathisen's son Jesper Mathisen was also employed as a football player, and he also played a large part of his career at Start Kristiansand.
