The 1. Divisjon 1986 was the 42nd season of the highest Norwegian football league and the 24th season under the name 1. Divisjon . The regular season began on April 27, 1986 and ended on October 19, 1986.

The twelve teams played against each other in a simple game round with a return game, so that each team played 22 games. Champion was the leader after the last match day. The last two teams had to be relegated. The third from last had to go to a relegation round against the two runners-up in the 2nd division (group A and B).

season

Lillestrøm SK became Norwegian champion for the fourth time.

Until the end of the first half of the season there was a balanced competition. At that point, the first eight teams were only four points apart. With six wins in a row, Lillestrøm took the lead with a three-point lead. They held this one; after the third to last game day they then had four points and ten goals ahead, so that it was actually only theoretically possible that Mjøndalen IF could oust them. With a defeat by Mjøndalen on the penultimate matchday, however, Lillestrøm made it early.

Of the promoted Hamarkameratene , Strømmen IF and Tromsø IL only Strømmen had to relegate. Tromsø only managed to stay in the relegation.
