The 2. divisjon 1987 was the 25th season of the second highest Norwegian football league .

mode

The 24 teams were divided into two groups of 12 teams each. They played against each other twice on 22 match days, divided into a first round and a second half. The two group winners were promoted directly to the 1st division. The two runners-up determined with the 10th of the 1st division another starting place for the 1st division. The last three clubs were relegated to the 3rd divisjon.

A new scoring system has been added for this one season only. The winner after regular playing time got three points. If the game was a draw, a penalty shoot-out was played immediately afterwards to determine a winner. The winner then got two more points, the loser one point. Losers after regular playing time received no points.
