The 1. divisjon 2001 was the 39th season of the second highest Norwegian football league and the eleventh under the name 1. divisjon . The season started on April 21st and ended on October 28th, 2001.

The league was increased from 14 to 16 teams for the 2001 season. Each team played once at home and once away against each of the fifteen other teams. As a result, each team played 30 games in the course of a season.

Master Vålerenga Oslo and the second start Kristiansand climbed directly into the Tippeligaen. The third placed Ham-Kam still had the chance in the relegation against the third from bottom of the Tippeligaen .

The last four teams FK Mandalskameratene, Kongsvinger IL, Kjelsås Fotball and Byåsen Toppfotball were relegated to the 2nd division .
