The 2. divisjon 1972 was the tenth season of the second highest Norwegian football league .

mode

A total of 35 teams were divided into four groups. In groups A and B, ten teams each played that did not come from the north of the country. The two group winners were promoted to the 1st division. The runners-up in group A and B played together with the winner of district group IX-X from the third climber. The bottom of the table in groups A and B were relegated directly to the 3rd divisjon, while the two penultimate played off the third relegated.

Eight teams from the provinces of Nordland , Helgeland and Troms , as well as seven teams from the province of Finnmark in District XI played in the district group IX – X. The two winners qualified for the northern Norwegian final.
