The 1. divisjon 1996 was the 34th season of the second highest Norwegian football league and the sixth under the name 1. divisjon . It began on April 28, 1996 and ended on September 29, 1996.

The 24 teams were divided into two groups of 12 teams each. They played against each other twice on 22 match days, divided into a first round and a second half. The two group winners were promoted directly to the Tippeligaen. The two runners-up identified the third climber.

This was the last season with two groups. From the following season, the championship in the 2nd division with 14 teams was led on a single track. Therefore, the last six teams from each group were relegated directly, the sixth placed had to be relegated.
