The 1. Divisjon 1987 was the 43rd season of the highest Norwegian football league and the 25th season under the name 1. Divisjon . The regular season began on May 2, 1987 and ended on October 10, 1987.

The twelve teams played against each other in a simple game round with a return game, so that each team played 22 games. Champion was the leader after the last match day. The last two teams had to be relegated. The third from last had to go to a relegation round against the two runners-up in the 2nd division (group A and B).
A new scoring system has been added for this one season only. The winner after regular playing time got three points. If the game was a draw, a penalty shoot-out was played immediately afterwards to determine a winner. The winner then got two more points, the loser one point. Losers after regular playing time received no points.
season
Moss FK became Norwegian champions for the first time.
Until the end of the first half of the season there was a balanced competition. At that point, the first seven teams were only five points apart. In the next few games, Moss then set off with up to seven points. But they gambled it away within three games. On matchday 20, even Molde FK briefly took the lead. On the last day of the match there was the direct encounter between the two championship candidates. With a 2-0 win over Molde, Moss became champions.
The newcomers Brann Bergen and Moss FK were able to keep the class. The " elevator team " Brann Bergen managed to stay in the 1st division for the first time in eight years (descent: 1979, 1981, 1983, 1985; ascent: 1980, 1982, 1984, 1986).
