The stadium was built by the municipality of Bodø as the home ground for FK Bodø / Glimt. Before construction began, there were long discussions in Bodø about where and in what form the system should be built.

In the 1970s, two European Cup games were hosted in the Aspmyra Stadium. In 1975, a spectator record was achieved with 12,189 spectators in a game between Glimt and Viking Stavanger . In 1980 the stadium was used for the Norwegian Athletics Championships.

Divisjon , and the re-emergence in 1992 the Norwegian football composite Football Association of Norway (NFF) that the FK Bodo / Glimt should not play in Aspmyra Stadium, he would in the highest league, the Eliteserien rising up. With money from the club's treasury and sponsorship funds, the lawn should be improved and provided with lawn heating . In 1993 Bødo / Glimt rose to the highest league and there were new discussions about expanding the stadium.

In 1997 the municipality of Bodø declared that the renovation could be carried out if the football club pays most of the costs. During the renovation work, additional grandstands were built in the south and east with space for a total of 4,350 spectators. The grandstands were put into use in 2001. The stadium also received new floodlights that were taken over from the Ullevaal Stadium in Oslo . The newly built stadium also received approval from UEFA to host UEFA Cup matches there , albeit with a limited number of seats.

The Aspmyra Stadium hosted a friendly match between the Norwegian national football team and Iceland on May 5, 2002 . The teams parted with a 1-1 draw. At the game, the audience record for the new grandstands was achieved with 8,800 spectators. After relegation to the 1st division in 2005, artificial turf was laid in the stadium.
