Jean-Roch Coignet

Jean-Roch Coignet (born August 16, 1776 in Druyes-les-Belles-Fontaines , Département Yonne , † December 10, 1865 in Auxerre ) was a soldier at the age of 23 in 1799 and remained so until 1815. He took part in all Napoleonic campaigns as a member of the Imperial Guard, participated in a total of thirty-four battles in sixteen campaigns. In 1813 he was promoted to captain in the general staff ( Capitaine de l'État-Major général ). In 1848 he wrote down his memoirs, which reflect the events of the Napoleonic Wars from the point of view of the common soldier.

The held in his records events provided the material for the seven-part television series Jean-Roch Coignet the ORTF .
