Martin Peudargent

Martin Peudargent (* around 1510 in Huy , today Belgium; † between 1589 and 1594 ; also written Peu d'Argent or Peu d'argent ) was a church musician and court composer at the Jülich-Klevischer Hof in Düsseldorf . Motets have mainly come down to us from Peudargent .

Life

The exact year of birth and death of the composer is unknown. After the entry in the DNB he was born around 1525, according to recent research around 1510, because he is already known as a house owner in the residential city of Kleve in 1532 . According to a source from 1587, where he was called "Sang-Mr Mertin van Hoya", Peudargent came from Huy in the Principality of Liège .

Before 1550 he entered the service of Wilhelm V von Jülich-Kleve-Berg as court composer . For this point in time, Peudargent wrote a motet on the occasion of the birth of the Duke's first daughter, Maria Eleonore (1550–1608), entitled In laudem Mariae Leonorae Guilielmi Ducis Clivensis, Juliacensis, Bergen etc. Primogenitae . He added this to his printed motet collection as number 11 in 1555. He also wrote two motets on the occasion of the birth of the Duke's son Karl Friedrich (1555–1575).

When Johannes Oridryus published a music treatise under the title Practicae musicae utriusque praecepta brevia in the Düsseldorf publishing house Bathen in 1557 , Peudargent was there for him as praefectum collegii musici in aula Illustrissimi Principis Guilielmi Ducis nostri clementissimi (Head of the Collegium Wilhelm) at the court of the Duke. Four years later, Peudargent published a further collection of motets under Oridryus and Buysius' Magister Musicus, in which he also included works by other composers.

In 1585, Peudargent played a key role in the musical design of the wedding celebration of the Duke's son Johann Wilhelm and Margravine Jakobe von Baden . Two years later, in a petition dated July 5, 1587, he complained that his grants had been cut and that he was no longer able to support his wife and children. In this petition, he referred to the long service for the duke and that he was blind in old age.

In the Jülich land rent master account of 1587, Peudargent was named as "Sang-Mr Mertin van Hoya", also in the court rules of 1589, but no longer in the court rules of 1594, from which it can be concluded that Peudargent died between 1589 and 1594.

Peudargent's collection of motets from 1555 is considered to be the first Düsseldorf music printing. Peudargent's tonal language does not show any innovations compared to Clemens non Papa in the harmony of his motets , but shows a stronger turning away from the church modes and a "revealing accentuation of the Latin text".
