Onyinye Wilfred Ndidi (born December 16, 1996 in Lagos ) is a Nigerian football player . He is mostly used as a defensive midfielder and is currently under contract in the English Premier League at Leicester City .

Club career

Genk (2015-2017)

Wilfred Ndidi started his career in his native Nigeria with Nath Boys FC and left Nigeria at the age of 18 and moved to the Pro League for KRC Genk during the winter break of the 2014/15 season . He made his debut for the Belgians on January 31, 2015 in the league game against RSC Charleroi . In the 1-0 defeat he was called up by coach Alex McLeish in the starting line-up and was substituted in the 74th minute.

In his second season in Genk, he scored his first goal for the club on January 15, 2016. In the 2-1 win in the league game against SV Zulte Waregem , he scored the interim 1-0 lead in the 16th minute. During the season he was able to qualify with his team for the Europa League qualification in the 2016/17 season. He made his debut in international club football on July 14, 2016 in the second qualifying round of the Europa League. In the 2-0 win against Budućnost Podgorica he was used by coach Peter Maes over the entire season.

After KRC Genk was able to qualify for the Europa League 2016/17 via the Europa League qualification , he made his debut in the Europa League on September 15, 2016 over the entire season in the 2: 3 defeat against Rapid Vienna . He scored his first goal in international club football on October 20, 2016. When beating Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League, he scored the 2-0 final score in the 83rd minute.

Leicester City (since 2017)

On January 3, 2017, Wilfred Ndidi switched to the Premier League as a winter newcomer to the then English champions Leicester City . Under coach Claudio Ranieri , he made his debut for his new club on January 7, 2017. In the 2-1 win in the FA Cup game against Everton , he was used over the entire season. A few days later, on January 14, 2017, he made his Premier League debut in a 3-0 loss to Chelsea . He scored his first goal for his new club on April 1, 2017 in the league game against Stoke City . In the 25th minute he achieved the interim 1-0 lead in a 2-0 victory.

He made his Champions League debut for Leicester City on February 22, 2017 in the first leg of the round of 16 against Sevilla FC . In the 1: 2 defeat, he was used over the entire season. With a win in the second leg he qualified with Leicester for the quarter-finals, where they were eliminated from the competition against Atlético Madrid .

National team career

After playing in the Nigerian U-20 national soccer team several times, he made his debut for the Nigerian national soccer team in a friendly against the Democratic Republic of the Congo on October 8, 2015 . In the 2-0 defeat he was substituted on by national coach Sunday Oliseh in the 83rd minute for Ogenyi Onazi . He made his competitive debut for Nigeria on September 3, 2016 in the Africa Cup of Nations qualification against Tanzania . In the 1-0 victory he was substituted on by national coach Gernot Rohr in the 63rd minute for John Obi Mikel .

For the 2018 World Cup he was appointed by national coach Gernot Rohr to the provisional World Cup squad of Nigeria. He was then also part of Nigeria's final squad. He retired with the team after defeats against Croatia and Argentina and a win against Iceland as third in Group D in the group stage. Ndidi was used in all three games.
