Jonathan Mensah (born July 13, 1990 in Accra ) is a Ghanaian soccer player who has been under contract with the American club Columbus Crew since January 2017 .
Career
society
Mensahs played in his youth for Ashanti Gold from Obuasi and belonged to the Ghanaian junior national teams. He belongs to the successful generation that won the African Junior Cup in 2009 and then the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
At the age of almost 18 he moved to South Africa, where he played for the Free State Stars from Bethlehem in the country's top division . After the U-20 success, European clubs also showed interest in the young central defender. A move to Panathinaikos Athens failed, however. Finally, he was signed by Udinese Calcio from Italy in early 2010 , but they immediately loaned him to Spain to Granada CF. There he played 15 games for the Spanish second division club. At the beginning of the 2011/12 season, he moved for an undisclosed transfer fee to the French promoted FC Évian Thonon Gaillard .
National team
Mensah played for the Ghanaian U-20 team , which won the U-20 World Cup in 2009 . On January 5, 2010, Jonathan Mensah was also on the field for the senior national team of Ghana for the first time. In the preparatory games for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa , he was used several times and included in the African World Cup squad . At the World Cup, he came to three missions.
