Gyasi Zardes (born September 2, 1991 in Hawthorne , California ) is an American football player . The striker has been playing for Columbus Crew in Major League Soccer since 2018 .

Player career

Youth and college

Zardes played on the LA Galaxy U-18 team from 2008 to 2009 . In 2009 he played with the U-20 team in the USL Super-20 League. With this team he won the national championship in 2010.

In 2009 he moved to California State University, Bakersfield , where he played college soccer for the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners. He scored five goals in his first season at college and was one of the best assists of the season. In 2011 he scored 18 goals in 20 games. His team reached the NCAA Division I Tournament for the first time in their history this season. He was also named Player of the Year by the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in 2011 and was nominated for the MAC Hermann Trophy, the highest honor in US college football.

LA Galaxy

LA Galaxy signed Zardes as a homegrown player on December 20, 2012. He was thus directly committed and did not have to find a team through a draft process. On April 27, 2013, he made his debut for the Californians. He scored his first goal in the MLS on May 11, 2013 against the Vancouver Whitecaps . In the 2014 season, he scored 19 cross-competition goals for the LA Galaxy .

Columbus Crew SC

On January 20, 2018, Zardes moved to the Columbus Crew in exchange for Ola Kamara . There he scored 19 goals in 33 regular season games in his first season, making him the franchise's most successful goalscorer in the 2018 season.

National team

On January 28, 2015, he made his debut for the United States national soccer team in a friendly against Chile . He came on in the 68th minute for Clint Dempsey . He scored his first international goal on June 5, 2015 in a friendly against the Netherlands in Amsterdam .
