Caleb Porter (born February 18, 1975 in Tacoma , Washington ) is a former American football player and current coach.

Player career

From 1994 to 1997 he attended Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana . There he played college soccer for the Indiana Hoosiers. In 1997 he graduated from college with a degree in Sports Management.

He came to the San Jose Clash via the MLS College Draft in 1998 and was only eligible to play from the 1999 season. He has been on the field four times this season. Due to poor performance, he was awarded during the season to the Sacramento Geckos, who played in the then A-League . In June 1999 he was released from Clash.

Just a month later, Porter returned to Major League Soccer and belongs to the Tampa Bay Mutiny . Due to many injuries, especially to the knee, he had to end his career as a football player on June 30, 2000.

Coaching career

In 2000 he returned to Indiana University and became an assistant coach for the college soccer team. After the previous coach of the college team at the University of Akron had left in December 2005, Porter took over as coach. In the following years he won the Mid-American Conference twice with the team and was named Coach of the Year in 2007. In 2010 he won the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship with the Zips . In the years to come, Porter was repeatedly named Trainer of the Year (2007 to 2012).

On October 20, 2011, in parallel to his work in Akron, he became the coach of the US U-23 national team . He was supposed to lead the team to the 2012 Summer Olympics in London . In the CONCACAF qualification tournament in March 2012, however, the USA could not prevail and thus not qualify for the Olympics.

On August 29, 2012 it was announced that Porter will be the new coach of the Portland Timbers in Major League Soccer. In his first season, he led the Timbers to win the Western Conference in the regular season in 2013. He was named Coach of the Year. In 2014 he was allowed to lead the MLS national team in the MLS All-Star Game against Bayern Munich as a coach.

On November 16, 2017, Porter and the Portland Timbers separated by mutual agreement.

On January 4, 2019, Porter took over the freelance coaching position with the Columbus Crew.
