Career

society

McGinn began his career with the Dungannon Swifts in his native Northern Ireland. In his first full season in 2007/08 he was tenth in the Northern Irish top division with the team. The previous season, McGinn was able to get a taste of the international air when he competed with Dungannon in the UI Cup . In the game against the representative from Iceland Keflavík ÍF , the midfielder played until the 69th minute before he was replaced by Mark Scott . In the winter of 2008/09 he moved to Derry City in the top Irish league. At the end of the season, the third place, and then McGinn moved to Celtic Glasgow in Scotland in the 2009/10 transition period . The Northern Irish made his debut in the Scottish Premier League on September 12, 2009 against Dundee United . He was in the starting line-up, but was replaced in the 79th minute for Kōki Mizuno . He was also used five times in the first Europa League season 2009/10 . Celtic had failed in the UEFA Champions League play-offs at Arsenal , fourth in the 2008/09 Premier League , but was allowed to continue playing in the group stage of the Europa League. Here Celtic took third place behind the Israeli runner-up Hapoel Tel Aviv and the Bundesliga fifth Hamburger SV . In the championship they had to bow to rivals Glasgow Rangers and were runner-up six points behind. They were the best team in the championship play-offs and could not make up for the 11 point deficit from the first round. Celtic was thus qualified for the third qualifying round of the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League, in which the team failed at Portuguese runners-up Sporting Braga , but McGinn was not considered. In the 2010/11 season , Celtic was only one point behind the Rangers after the first round, but could not catch up in the championship play-offs and became runner-up again. In the Scottish FA Cup 2010/11 Celtic won the final against FC Motherwell , McGinn was not used in the entire cup competition. In July 2011 he was loaned to the English third division club Brentford , where he made 37 league games on more missions than at Celtic in two previous seasons. In July 2012 he then moved to Aberdeen FC on a free transfer and played again in the Scottish Premier League. In his first season with the "Dons" he had to go to the relegation playoffs, which the team survived without any problems. With 20 goals, McGinn was fourth top scorer. In the following season he was only one of the two seventh-best goalscorers with 13 goals, but the Dons finished the 1st round as the second-best team and after the championship playoffs were third for the 1st qualifying round of the 2014 UEFA Europa League / 15 qualified. He also won the 2013/14 Scottish League Cup with Aberdeen . In the UEFA Europa League, the Scots prevailed against the Estonian fourth FK Daugava Riga . The second round against FC Groningen was also survived, with McGinn contributing a goal to the 2-1 win in Groningen. In the third round they lost both games against Real Sociedad San Sebastián , the seventh in the Spanish championship . McGinn was used in all six games in which he scored two goals. The 2014/15 season joined Aberdeen as runners from had, but in the end 17 points behind Celtic. But they had secured participation in the first qualifying round for the 2015/16 UEFA Europa League. They survived this only through the away goal rule against the Macedonian third KF Shkëndija , whereby McGinn had brought the Scots 1-0 lead in the 1-1 first leg in Skopje , so that a 0-0 in the home stadium in the second leg was enough. In the second round against the Croatian runner-up HNK Rijeka , they won 3-0 in Rijeka. In the second leg, however, they were 2-0 down in the 63rd minute. A minute later, McGinn scored the next goal and eight minutes later the Dons equalized. In the third round they took them to far away Kazakhstan, where they met the Kazakh third FK Qairat Almaty and lost 2-1. They could not make up for this with a 1-1 draw in the second leg. He finished the 2015/16 season with Aberdeen again as runner-up and was now able to reduce the gap to Celtic to 15 points.

National team

Niall McGinn made his debut for the national team on November 19, 2008 in the friendly international match against Hungary in Belfast . The game was lost 2-0, McGinn came on in the 55th minute for Michael Duff . Then he was in the World Cup qualification, but after four games as a bench press and two appearances in friendly games, he made his first competitive appearance in a 2-0 draw against Slovakia in September 2009 and his first game over 90 minutes a month later. The Northern Irish missed the World Cup finals in South Africa due to the defeat against the Slovaks and the subsequent 1-1 draw against the Czechs . The following qualification for the EM 2012 , in which he came to six missions, was again unsuccessful.

In the next World Cup qualification , he made his first appearance after a torn ligament in a 1-1 draw against Portugal on October 16, 2012 and scored his first international goal in Cristiano Ronaldo's 100th international match and thus the 1-0 lead for the Northern Irish. He was then used in the next 13 games, but the Northern Irish could not qualify for the World Cup under the new coach Michael O'Neill .

In qualifying for the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was substituted on in the first game against Hungary only in the last period, but then scored the 1-1 equalizer and prepared the 2-1 winner for Northern Ireland. In seven of the remaining nine games he was used and three times he helped secure valuable points with templates. In the end, Northern Ireland was able to participate in an EM for the first time and McGinn was included in his country's squad. He has not yet been used at the start against Poland . In the second game against Ukraine he made his European Championship debut a few minutes before the end of regular time. In the last minute of stoppage time, he scored the 2-0 for his team and made Northern Ireland's first ever European victory perfect. Against world champions Germany he was substituted in towards the end of the last group game, but was unable to turn the game that had been lost 1-0. Nevertheless, the Northern Irish qualified as fourth-best group third for the round of 16, where it came against Wales for the first British knockout game at a major football tournament. After Gareth McAuley had steered the ball into his own net to make it 0-1 a quarter of an hour before the end, McGinn came on for the third time as a substitute, but could do nothing to avert the tournament's end.
