Joseph Peter "Joe" Lewis (born October 6, 1987 in Broome ) is an English football goalkeeper who has been under contract with FC Aberdeen since 2016 .

Club career

Beginning with Norwich City

Joe Lewis was spotted playing a Norwich City tournament at the age of eight . On September 27, 2003, he stood for the first time in the professional squad of the Canaries when he held the position of substitute goalkeeper in the home game against Crystal Palace and at the age of 15 years and 356 days put the youngest player ever in the professional squad at Norwich City. As the youngest player to ever play a competitive game for Norwich, his then teammate Ryan Jarvis holds the record. The offensive player made his league debut at the age of 16 years and 282 days. At that time, Lewis, who was mainly active in the club's own youth academy, was initially denied a job in a professional league. In the summer of 2004, he graduated from Bungay High School . In November 2004 he signed his first professional contract, the term of which was limited to the end of June 2007.

In the seasons 2004/05 and 2005/06 , in which Norwich was now in the second division after relegation from the Premier League , Lewis was regularly nominated as a substitute goalkeeper, but not used in a competitive game. In June 2006, then head coach Nigel Worthington announced that he would like to loan the goalkeeper for the following season in order to allow him regular match practice with a professional team. In November 2006 he completed a trial training at FC Bury . Head coach Chris Caspers sought a replacement in the goalkeeping position to replace Manchester City borrowed goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel after his return to the Citizens . After Lewis had played a game for the reserve team of Bury FC, the loan deal did not materialize.

Lending deals with Stockport County and Morecambe FC

On March 22, 2007 a loan deal came about with Stockport County , at the same time the Welsh Wayne Hennessey played on loan at the club . On April 9, 2007 Lewis made his professional debut in the fourth highest English league, Football League Two , when he was in the home game against Chester City the entire game in goal of the Hatters and ended the game without conceding. In his five missions, the goalkeeper had to concede four goals and three games without conceding a goal.

In May 2007, he signed a new, three-year contract with Norwich City. On August 8, 2007, he agreed with Morecambe FC on a loan move. The goalkeeper signed a loan contract with the Shrimps that was valid until the end of December . Three days later, the goalkeeper played his first league game for Morecambe in the home game against FC Barnet and secured the team a point in the goalless draw. In December, shortly before the loan period expired, Morecambe FC head coach Sammy McIlroy tried to extend the loan deal until the end of the season. With Norwich struggling with injury issues, Lewis was called back on the deadline.

Signature and transfer record at Peterborough United

Shortly after his return to his home club, the goalkeeper decided to leave the second division and sign a four and a half year contract with Peterborough United . At the then fourth division club, Lewis made a new transfer record through his commitment, which the club cost around £ 400,000. According to head coach Darren Ferguson , the most expensive acquisition in the club's history was one of the “most promising goalkeepers in the country”.

After the 2007/08 season he succeeded with the Posh as runner-up behind the Milton Keynes Dons of direct promotion to Football League One . The 2008/09 season was also successful when Lewis was able to defend his regular place in goal and realized the second promotion in a row with Peterborough. As runner-up behind Leicester City , the team was promoted to the Football League Championship . After only one season in the second highest division, however, another setback followed and relegation to League One. As the bottom of the table with 34 points and a total of 80 goals conceded, the team fell significantly behind the non-relegation places, whose saving bank Crystal Palace occupied with 49 points.

National team

For the England U-21 national team , Lewis completed a total of five internationals. He played his first game on May 15, 2008 against Wales , and the goalkeeper played his fifth appearance on June 22, 2009 against Germany . Overall, he recorded three wins in the U-21 selection and ended two games in a draw. On May 24, 2008 he was called up by the English coach Fabio Capello surprisingly in the national team for a friendly against the United States after the substitute goalkeeper Chris Kirkland was absent due to an injury.

He was also active in the U-15, U-16 and U-17 selection in his home country.
