The Scottish Premiership is 2020/21 , the seventh staging the highest Scottish football -Spielklasse the men under that name. The league is officially run as the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership . It is also the 124th edition of the highest football division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions are determined. The season began on August 1, 2020, and ends after two rounds with the 38th matchday on May 15, 2021.
After the regular season, which is called the 1st round and in which all teams compete against each other three times, the final 2nd round begins, which is divided into two groups of championship and relegation play-offs . The eleventh place in the Premiership then competes in relegation games , in which the runner-up, third and fourth place finishers in the Scottish Championship participate. The bottom of the table is relegated directly.
As a newcomer from last year's championship , Dundee United takes part in the Premiership. The defending champion is Celtic Glasgow . A possible increase in the league to 14 clubs and a change in the championship and relegation play-offs was made on the initiative of Ann Budge, the owner of last year's relegated Heart of Midlothian . This was unsuccessful.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , there have been no football matches in Scotland since March 13, 2020. The SFL , which had decided to suspend the previous season until June 10, lifted the ban on June 11 to allow clubs to resume training after meeting Sports Secretary Joe FitzPatrick . The top division began in August 2020 initially without an audience when Scotland is in phase two of the easing of the Covid-19 ban.
