The Scottish Football League Division One was played for the 66th time in 1965/66 . It was also the 69th edition of the highest soccer division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. It began on August 25, 1965 and ended on May 7, 1966. In the 1965/66 season, 18 clubs competed against each other in a total of 34 match days. Each team played once at home and away against every other team. The 2-point rule applied . In the event of a tie, the goal quotient counted .
The championship won for the 21st time in the club's history Celtic Glasgow . The Bhoys qualified as champions for the following European Cup season-1966/67 . In this European competition, Celtic won the final 2-1 against Inter Milan . As a result, this team has immortalized itself in history as the Lisbon Lions and became the first British club to win an official European competition. The third, fourth and fifth placed, FC Kilmarnock , Dunfermline Athletic and Dundee United qualified for the Exhibition Cities Cup . As cup winners , the Glasgow Rangers qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup . The Rangers reached the final against Bayern Munich, which was lost 0-1 after extra time. Morton and Hamilton Academical were relegated to Division Two at the end of the season . The top scorer was Joe McBride from Celtic Glasgow and Alex Ferguson from Dunfermline Athletic with 31 goals each .
