The Scottish Premier League was played for the seventh time in 2004/05 . It was also the 108th edition of the top soccer division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. In the 2004/05 season, 12 clubs competed against each other in a total of 38 matchdays. Each team played once at home and away against every other team in the first round. After that, the league was divided into two halves, in which the teams play against each other again. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The Glasgow Rangers won the Scottish Championship for the 51st time in the club's history. The Rangers qualified as champions for the Champions League season 2005/06 . Runner-up Celtic Glasgow also played in the Champions League because of Scotland's improved position in the UEFA five-year standings . The defeated cup finalists Dundee United , as well as the third-placed Hibernian Edinburgh qualified for the UEFA Cup . The Dundee FC rose at the end of the season in the First Division . Celtic Glasgow's John Hartson was the top scorer with 25 goals .
