Thomas Buffel (born February 19, 1981 in Bruges , Belgium ) is a former Belgian football player . He played in midfield, but could also be used in attack.

Buffel began his career with his hometown club in Ruddervoorde at the age of five and signed with Cercle Bruges at the age of ten before moving to Feyenoord Rotterdam in the Netherlands . After he had mostly only remained in the reserve team at Feyenoord, he was loaned to local rivals Excelsior Rotterdam for two years , where he made a decisive contribution to promotion to the Eredivisie in 2001/02 , and then moved back to Feyenoord.
In 2005 Buffel moved to the Glasgow Rangers after six years in the Netherlands . In 2008 he moved to Cercle Bruges in his home country Belgium. From 2009 to 2018 he played for KRC Genk and was able to celebrate the championship with the club in 2011 and the cup victory in 2013.
In the summer of 2018, his move to league rivals SV Zulte Waregem was announced. After the end of the 2018/19 season, he announced his departure from professional football.
National team
Buffel made his debut in the Belgian national team on October 12, 2002 against Andorra. By 2013 he had played a total of 35 games in which he scored six goals. He has not been nominated since then.
