The Scottish Football League 1890/91 was the first season of the highest Scottish football league . It began on August 16, 1890, and ended on May 12, 1891. For the first and so far last time the title was split after Dumbarton FC and Glasgow Rangers had finished the season with the same number of points. A play-off that should finally determine the champions ended in a 2-2 draw. The game was played on May 21, 1891 at Cathkin Park in Glasgow .

Other strange events also took place during the season. For example, FC Renton was excluded from the league after four games played because of professionalism, so that the club's results were canceled. Relegated was the FC Cowlairs , which did not get reelection from the other league members. The top scorer was Jack Bell from FC Dumbarton with 20 goals .
