William Wilton (born June 9, 1865 in Largs , Ayrshire , † May 2, 1920 in Gourock ) was a Scottish football player and long-time coach who coached the Glasgow Rangers team until his death .

Wilton had been with the Rangers since September 1883, but 16 years passed before he was appointed coach in 1899. Before his coaching engagement, he was managing director for the youth teams and from 1889 also for the professional team. In these ten years as managing director of the first team, the club won two championships (1891 and 1899) and three times the Scottish Cup (1894, 1897 and 1898). When the Scottish Football League was founded in 1890 , Wilton also took care of the finances. At the end of the 1890 season, the Rangers had to share the title with Dumbarton . In the 1898/99 season, the Rangers set a record for the ages: They won all 18 games, scored 79 goals and conceded only 18 goals. No other team has succeeded in this to date. Only Arsenal FC came a little closer to the 2004 record when they remained undefeated for one season. Under Wilton's coaching engagement, the Rangers won the championship eight times. The day after the last game of the season in 1920, Wilton wanted to go on vacation to Gourock , but he died on the first day of the vacation in a boating accident.
