John McLeod (born March 12, 1866 in Dumbarton , † February 4, 1953 ) was a Scottish football goalkeeper . In his playing career, he won the Scottish Championship twice in the 1890s .

Career

John McLeod was born in Dumbarton in 1866. From 1887 he played in his hometown for Dumbarton Athletic . With the club he took in the seasons 1887/88 and 1888/89 the Scottish Cup in part. When he first participated, he and his team lost 4-2 to the eventual winner FC Renton in the second round . The following year he was only eliminated from Renton in the quarterfinals. Shortly afterwards he moved to FC Dumbarton . In his second year for the new club, he reached the cup final of 1891 which was lost to Heart of Midlothian . In the first season of the Scottish Football League he won the Scottish Championship with Dumbarton , which also went to the Glasgow Rangers tied . In the season 1891/92 the title could be defended before Celtic Glasgow . For the club he played a total of 108 competitive games by 1895, 76 in the league and 32 in the cup. Although McLeod played in the position of goalkeeper, he scored three goals including two in the league against FC Cambuslang and Third Lanark . After Dumbarton at the end of the 1894/95 season only Knapp could prevent relegation to Division Two , he moved to the Glasgow Rangers. In the 1895/96 season he played five games and was runner-up behind Celtic Glasgow.

Between 1888 and 1893 he made five caps for Scotland . He took part in the British Home Championship five times , and won it with the national team in 1889 and 1890 .
