William Thomson (also spelled Thompson) was a Scottish football player . In his playing career, he won two Scottish championships with FC Dumbarton in the 1890s .

Career

William Thomson began his career at Dumbarton FC about 20 km northwest of Glasgow . With the club he won the Scottish Championship in 1891 and 1892 . He scored seven goals in 29 games. Between April and October 1893 he was under contract with the English club Aston Villa . He then played for Newton Heath for which he completed three games in the 1893/94 season . At the end of the season his previous club had become champions , Newton Heath relegated bottom of the table. Thomson returned to Dumbarton FC in 1894. In the following four years he appeared 25 times in the league and scored three goals. From 1898 he played for FC Clyde .

Between 1892 and 1898 Thomson completed five caps for Scotland in which he was able to score a goal. He made his debut on March 26, 1892 in a 6-1 win over Wales during the British Home Championship 1891/92 . Thomson was able to take the lead in the first minute of the game. He took part in the British Home Championship a total of four times with Scotland and won it with the national team in 1896 .
