The Scottish Football League Premier Division was played for the 23rd and final time in 1997/98 . After this season, the Scottish Premier League was founded, which separated from the Scottish Football League . It was also the 101st edition of a top soccer division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. In the 1997/98 season, 10 clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 match days. Each team played twice at home and twice against every other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
Celtic Glasgow won the Scottish Championship for the 36th time in the club's history. This ended the period of 9 titles in a row of city rivals Glasgow Rangers . The Bhoys qualified as champions for the 1998/99 Champions League season . As a cup winner , Heart of Midlothian qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup . The second and fourth placed, Glasgow Rangers and FC Kilmarnock qualified for the UEFA Cup .
Hibernian Edinburgh was relegated to the First Division at the end of the season . With 32 goals Marco Negri of the Glasgow Rangers became the top scorer.
