Career
society
Until 1993 McCann played in the youth team of Dundee FC . Then he made his debut in the first team, for which he completed 79 second division games in the following three years. In 1996 he moved to the first division for Heart of Midlothian , with whom he was Scottish Cup winner in 1998 . During the winter break of the 1998/99 season, McCann was signed by record champions Glasgow Rangers for € 3 million . Most of his successes stem from his time at Glasgow. There he was three times champion (1999, 2000, 2003), four times cup winners (1999, 2000, 2002, 2003) and twice league cup winners (2002, 2003). His two goals on May 2, 1999 against arch rivals Celtic Glasgow , with which the championship title was sealed in a direct comparison, will not be forgotten . In August 2003 he moved to the English Premier League club FC Southampton for around 2 million euros . Due to several injuries, however, it was not possible for him to establish himself as a regular player. In 2005 Southampton rose in a heartbeat final in the second division . During the winter break of the 2005/06 season his contract was terminated by mutual agreement and McCann returned to his former club Heart of Midlothian, where he was able to celebrate another Scottish championship in his career in 2006. On August 25, 2007, he broke his tibia and fibula during the league game against Celtic Glasgow. He made his comeback in the Scottish Premier League on January 26, 2008 when he came on for Saulius Mikoliunas in the 1-0 win in Aberdeen in the 85th minute. For the 2008/09 season he moved to league rivals FC Falkirk . At the beginning of the 2009/10 season, the contract was terminated by mutual agreement.
National team
Neil McCann made his debut for Scotland on September 5, 1998, when he came on for Ally McCoist in the game against Lithuania (0-0) . He made his first game from the start against the Czech Republic on March 31, 1999. By 2005, he played a total of 26 international matches and scored 3 goals.
Trainer
In April 2017, after the dismissal of Paul Hartley , McCann took over the interim coaching position at first division club FC Dundee and led the club to stay in the league for the remaining five match days. After a ninth place in the 2017/18 season, he was dismissed from last place in the table after a false start in the 2018/19 season, with only three points from eight games.
