The Scottish League Cup was played for the 56th time in 2001/02 . The Scottish League Cup, which was officially played as the CIS Insurance League Cup , began on September 2, 2001 and ended with the final on March 17, 2002. The clubs of the Scottish Football League and Scottish Premier League took part in the competition. If a duel was not decided after 90 minutes plus extra time, there was a penalty shoot-out . The Glasgow Rangers secured the title in the final against second division club Ayr United .
