Willard Herman Scott (born March 7, 1934 in Alexandria , Virginia - † September 4, 2021 in Delaplane , Virginia) was an American actor , author and professional clown . He was best known as the actor of the clown Bozo in the children's program Bozo, the clown (Bozo's Circus) and as the first actor in the advertising character Ronald McDonald .

Life

Willard H. Scott grew up in Alexandria, Virginia, and attended George Washington High School . He then attended American University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Religion . Scott was married to Mary Dwyer Scott from 1959 to 2002. This marriage resulted in a son and a daughter.

Career

Scott worked as a radio host and professional clown in the 1960s . He was first seen from 1959 to 1962 in the children's program Bozo, the Clown , which was broadcast on television in Washington . In 1963, WRC-TV produced three commercials starring Scott alias Ronald McDonald, which were broadcast in the Washington area. In the same year , “Ronald” made his first public appearance at a Thanksgiving parade in Washington, DC as the new, official mascot of McDonald’s . Scott's career as Ronald came to an end in 1966. From 1982 to 1996, Scott hosted the NBC television program The Today Show as a weather announcer .
