The Scottish League Cup was played for the 24th time in 1969/70 . The Scottish Football League Cup, which was played among the participants of the Scottish Football League , began on August 9, 1969 and ended with the final on October 25, 1969 in Hampden Park in Glasgow . As defending champion, Celtic Glasgow started the competition that had prevailed against Hibernian Edinburgh in the previous year's final . In this year's final, Celtic met against FC St. Johnstone . For Celtic it was the sixth consecutive final since 1965 and the eighth overall since 1957 . The Saints from Perth reached the final of the League Cup for the first time in the club's history. The second final participation followed in 1999 . The Bhoys won the final 1-0 with a goal from Bertie Auld . It was the seventh league cup triumph for Celtic since 1957. In the 1969/70 season , Celtic was also Scottish champion for the 25th time . In the cup final was defeated Celtic against FC Aberdeen . Due to the victory in the championship, Celtic took part in the European Cup in the following season . The Saints remained without European Cup participation. Celtic was eliminated from the European Cup in the quarter-finals against the eventual winner Ajax Amsterdam .
