The Scottish League Cup was played for the 30th time in 1975/76 . The Scottish Football League Cup, which was played among the participants of the Scottish Football League , began on August 9, 1975 and ended with the final on October 25, 1975 in Hampden Park in Glasgow . As the defending champion, Celtic started Glasgow which had prevailed against Hibernian Edinburgh in the previous year's final . In this year's final, Celtic met the Glasgow Rangers at the Old Firm . It was the sixth Old Firm final in the League Cup after 1958 , 1965 , 1966 , 1967 and 1971 . For Celtic it was the twelfth game in a row since 1965 and the 15th overall since 1957 . The Rangers reached the final for the twelfth time, most recently in 1971 . The Rangers won the final 1-0 with a goal from Alex MacDonald . It was the eighth league cup triumph for the Gers . In the 1975/76 season that won Rangers also for the fourth time in club history the triple of Championship , Cup and League Cup. Due to the victory in the championship, Rangers took part in the 1976/77 European Cup in the following season , Celtic as the loser in the cup final of the 1976/77 UEFA Cup .
