The Scottish League Cup was played for the 32nd time in 1977/78 . The Scottish Football League Cup, which was played among the participants of the Scottish Football League , began on August 17, 1977 and ended with the final on March 18, 1978 in Hampden Park in Glasgow . The defending champions FC Aberdeen made it to the round of 16, in which the team was defeated by the Glasgow Rangers against the eventual winner . In the final there was an old firm derby for the seventh time after 1958 , 1965 , 1966 , 1967 , 1971 and 1976 . Celtic reached the final for the 14th time since 1965 (6 wins; 8 losses). The Rangers won this year's final 2-1 after extra time and were able to perfect their 9th title in the League Cup. Before the final, both teams were record winners of the competition with eight successes each, the statistics of the direct finals were 3: 3. Celtic lost after 1976 and 1977 in the third final in a row.
